Emerging from a secluded barn in backwoods Massachusetts, Akudama stumbled into the light of day with the material for their ambitious sophomore album. In an effort to create a strong, naturally-formed follow-up to their first release, Flying Over Morning, the band spent the entire month of August in isolation, living, eating, practicing and growing as a cohesive unit. What emerged was their most sophisticated and diverse sound yet.
The band utilizes basic rock instrumentation: vocals, guitar, drums and bass, but the richly textured sound is anything but ordinary. Riffs are drenched with lush reverb reminiscent of Ambulance LTD and Minus The Bear, while wistful, hypnotic melodies recall classic outfits such as Tears For Fears and The Zombies.
The group started when brothers Calvin and Cayce Pia began collaboration on a few ideas. Long-time friend and musician Blake Charleton quickly joined the two, contributing his own style of brushstroke guitars and emphatic voice to the mix.
In the past few years, Akudama has developed a widespread fan base consisting of hipsters to fans of mainstream pop-rock, blues and jazz, pleasing even the most casual listener. Their first release, flying over morning, resonates as a sound of polished naïveté, a celebration of bountiful emotion and youthful dynamics, similar to that of Broken Social Scene. They consistently dazzle audiences, from basements to clubs and larger venues throughout the Northeast. Akudama has shared bills with many notable groups, though most prestigiously, playing in an Endless Recordings showcase that featured The Arcade Fire.
Stay tuned for the release of an early summer E.P. to be supported by an extensive National summer tour. Additionally, Akudama plan to deliver a full-length to the world in the fall that will feature a unique audio/visual experience. More details are forthcoming.
